Grundfos BioBooster part of Pronova BioPharma’s new billion DKK manufacturing plant
Grundfos BioBooster becomes an important part of Norwegian pharmaceutical company Pronova BioPharma’s new manufacturing plant in Kalundborg, Denmark. The new plant will double the production capacity of the company’s Omega-3 derived pharmaceutical products used for the prevention of myocardial infarction.Grundfos BioBooster was awarded the double-digit million DKK wastewater treatment contract in fierce competition with conventional wastewater technology providers – primarily due to its compact design, fast implementation, flexibility in capacity and attractive economics.

High flexibility of the waste-
water treatment solution was a crucial and decisive factor for Pronova BioPharma. With Grundfos BioBooster they have the possibility of doubling the wastewater treatment capacity within the allocated area to accommodate possible future plant and production expansions. Furthermore, unlike conventional technologies a Grundfos BioBooster solution can be adjusted to match Pronova BioPharma’s exact treatment needs when the composition of their discharged wastewater is fully known – as this remains unclear at the present stage of the greenfield project.
Biological and chemical pre-treatment of the wastewater before discharge to the municipal authorities represent the most cost-efficient solution for Pronova BioPharma due to the high contents of fatty acids in the Omacor/Lovaza capsules, which are derived from fish oil.
Grundfos BioBooster’s contract includes a complete turnkey wastewater pre-treatment solution with discharge to the municipal wastewater treatment plant in Kalundborg. The Grundfos BioBooster solution contains biological as well as mechanical/chemical treatment. The total solution comprises 15 multi-layer containers with 144 PBR reactors and auxiliary equipment for wastewater balancing, chemical storage and sludge handling.
