Full treatment. Typical system setup.

In some applications screens are used to remove large particles, e.g. fruit meats, seeds, corns, stones, and other debris before it enters the balancing system.

Balancing system

Primary functions of the balancing system:
  • Levels outflow variances from production, and makes it possible to run a constant flow through the treatment plant.
  • Acid and caustic streams from CIP processes are levelled out to reduce the need for dosing to a minimum.
  • Peaks of organics are levelled out to create a more uniform load on the treatment plant.

Pre-treatment

If the wastewater has a high content of suspended solids, pre-treatment is necessary. In the pre-treatment process, particulate matters, e.g. oils, fats, proteins, and other suspended solids, are removed from the wastewater using coagulants and polymers. Belt filters are used for this step as standard. But DAF (Dissolved air flotation) units can also be used if already present onsite.

Biological treatment in the PBR

Dissolved organics such as sugars, lactose, and ethanol are removed in the biological, aerob organic removal process performed inside the PBR. Oxygen is generated onsite using standard air compressors and oxygen generators.

Some of the removed organics turn into CO2, which vents off, and the rest turns into biological sludge. Nutrients are dosed in case the wastewater does not contain sufficient nutrients for the biological transformation process.

Membrane filtration in the MBR

In the MBR, remaining organics are removed in the same matter as in the PBR. Furthermore, all generated biological sludge and bacteria are separated from the cleaned water using the built-in UF (ultra filtration) membranes.

Sludge tank

Sludge from pre-treatment and post-treatment is stored in the sludge tank for removal with standard tankers and used for spreading on land or biogas generation, as the potential for this is very good.

Odour emission

Vents from the biological reactors, the sludge tank, as well as all open areas inside the containers (e.g. belt filters) are run through activated carbon filters to eliminate any odour emissions from the plant.
